I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
Over the years I have had the opportunity to serve and work with some tough men. As a member of a Force Reconnaissance Platoon and Marine Special Operations Company I have had the opportunity to witness some amazing feats of strength and endurance by some of the most physically fit men I have ever been around. I remember when I first started working with these elite military professionals I was very intimidated and discouraged. These guys were slim, trim, and looked like the poster boys for Special Operations. I on the other hand am not so slim, not so trim, and at this point have not gotten any offers to be on a poster. I thinly veiled my concerns to an older guy I worked with and he assured me that in his experience it wasn’t the poster boys that made the cut but the ones that persevered mentally that would endure to the end.
As we stand before the mountains and valleys of life it is easy for us to get intimidated. As we look around it seems as if everyone else has it together except us. We start to question our abilities, life choices, and future. We must not get discouraged! We must anchor ourselves in our identity in Christ. We must remember that it is Christ that works in us and through us. Our Heavenly Father has promised to bring his adopted children through this life on into glory where we will enjoy him forever! There is no mountain or valley that will ever divert the path to Heaven. In Christ, we can persevere and endure all things. Additionally, we have the assurance that the things we are enduring will be used for God’s glory and our holiness. Does that mean we don’t lament, struggle, or cry out? No. It just means that as we traverse the up’s and downs of life we endure and persevere with confidence that God has us in his hand and we will overcome. This is not a “pie in the sky” sentiment. This is truth as revealed by our Lord. Rest, rejoice, and revel in the privileged of this promise!
