What is Alpha?

Alpha is an opportunity to explore the meaning of life and some of life’s big questions, over ten sessions. Each session looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation. Alpha is run all around the globe, and everyone is welcome. Alpha runs in all kinds of places but they all have three key things in common: food, a talk and good conversation.

Alpha is for everyone; no question is out of bounds and you are free to discuss as much or as little as you wish. People come from all kinds of backgrounds: some to investigate whether God exists; others may have attended church on and off all their lives but feel like they are missing something. We don’t assume any background knowledge of or belief in Christianity and everyone is welcome.
Each session, people enjoy great food, laughter and learning in a fun and friendly atmosphere where no question about life or God is seen as too simple or too hostile. There are three key ingredients:

Food

Whether it’s a group of friends gathered around a kitchen table, or a quick catch-up over coffee and cake, food has a way of bringing people together. It’s no different at Alpha. We start with food, because it’s a great way to encourage community and get to know each otherSo every evening of the course, you can expect a great meal waiting for you and you don’t have to do or bring anything.

Talk

The talks are designed to engage and inspire conversation. Generally 25-30 minutes long, they are given through a dynamic upbeat documentary style video. They explore the big issues around faith and unpack the basics of Christianity, addressing questions such as Who is Jesus? and How can we have faith?

Discussion

Probably the most important part of any Alpha: the chance to share thoughts and ideas on the topic, and simply discuss it in a small group. There’s no obligation to say anything. and there’s nothing you can’t say. It’s an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in an honest, friendly and open environment.

It is low-key, friendly and fun – and is supported by all the main Christian denominations. Alpha is being run by churches of every denomination, including Episcopal, Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Baptist, Presbyterian, Methodist, Pentecostal, Salvation Army and non-denominational churches. Wherever the course is being held, all churches provide the same material, making alterations only to suit local culture. People come from many different backgrounds, holding many different viewpoints – but all come with the same objective: to establish whether Jesus Christ has any real relevance for their lives.

Over 500 people have taken the Alpha course at Free Christian Church. Some were longtime attendees, some came from other churches but many had no connection with any church. Here is what a few of these people said about their experience.

“Before Alpha, I would say I believed in God but I wasn’t sure about Jesus. Now I can say that I know who Jesus is and I have no fear in saying I believe in him because I have experienced His love. I have felt his Sprit. I realized that my love for the people in my life is greater because suddenly there is this great love in me.” – Audra Hebert

“Before Alpha, the question I always had was where does God fit into my life? After Alpha, I realized the real question was how does my life fit into God’s plans?” – Jim Hackett

What does the press say about Alpha?
“…many claim Alpha has changed their lives and appear genuinely happier for the experience.” – Time Magazine

“What Alpha offers, and what is attracting thousands of people, is permission, rare in secular culture, to discuss the big questions – life and death and their meaning”
– Madeleine Bunting, The Guardian
